What are Cancel Saves?
Cancel saves are interventions presented to subscribers who attempt to cancel, offering them an alternative (discount, pause, or downgrade) to retain them instead of losing them entirely.
Why it matters
Not every subscriber who clicks "cancel" is truly gone. Research across SaaS and subscription businesses consistently shows that 30-40% of members who initiate a cancellation can be retained when presented with the right offer at the right moment. The key insight is that cancellation is often a negotiation, not a final verdict. The subscriber is signaling dissatisfaction, and a well-designed save flow addresses that dissatisfaction before it becomes permanent.
The reason behind the cancellation matters enormously. A subscriber who says "it's too expensive" needs a different response than one who says "I'm taking a break" or "I'm not using all the features." A flat discount shown to everyone is wasteful and ineffective. The most successful cancel save systems collect the reason first, then present a targeted offer: a discount for price sensitivity, a pause for temporary disengagement, a downgrade to a cheaper tier for feature mismatch.
Without cancel saves, every cancellation attempt converts immediately to lost revenue. The subscriber leaves, their role is revoked, and the server owner has no opportunity to intervene. Even worse, a subscriber who leaves abruptly is far less likely to return than one who was offered an alternative and chose to stay or pause. Cancel saves preserve the relationship even when they don't prevent the immediate cancellation.
How Arcalotl handles this
When a subscriber runs the cancel command, Arcalotl presents a Discord modal collecting their reason for leaving. The subscriber selects from options like "too expensive," "taking a break," "not using all features," "switching to something else," or "other." This isn't just data collection; it drives the entire save logic. Based on the selected reason and the subscriber's tenure, Arcalotl dynamically selects and presents the most effective retention offer.
For price-sensitive subscribers, Arcalotl can offer a percentage discount for the next billing cycle. For subscribers taking a break, it offers a pause that freezes billing for a configurable duration (the role is revoked during the pause and restored when billing resumes). For subscribers who feel they're overpaying for features they don't use, it offers a downgrade to a lower tier. Each offer type is configurable per server, and server owners can adjust discount percentages, pause durations, and which tiers are offered as downgrades.
Every cancellation attempt, save offer presented, and outcome (saved, cancelled anyway, or dismissed) is tracked in the analytics dashboard. You can see your save rate broken down by cancel reason, which tells you exactly where your retention is strongest and where it needs work. If subscribers citing "too expensive" are saving at 40% but those citing "switching to something else" are saving at 5%, you know your pricing offer works but you may need to investigate competitive positioning.
